The fact that we come back from 6 weeks of mental hibernation to resume education here at Ohio University gives us all a chance to reflect and respond to what happened and plan for what might happen. Unfortunately, for me, all this time was given to preparing for the future (performances and musical debut, to be exact) rather than relfection. So in an effort to remedy that, I’m going to reflect now on the eve of a day that changed American history for the better. Martin Luther King Day is a day that shouldn’t be written off at all. This is a man who worked for equality of all people, not just black people. Most, I feel, tend to forget that. And in this spirit, I’ve looked at all of my really good friends and I can’t believe how many of whom I may not have had an opportunity to meet had we been transported back even to the 60’s. Take a time out of your day to see just how different this America would be without a man like this who worked for all of us, one way or another. In this spirit, I also would like to apologize right now for anyone whom I may have made feel unwelcome or unwanted. It is never my intention, as someone who has felt those feelings before, to ever make anyone feel that way. For those of you who feel neglected or unheard, I beg of you to look at yourself and look at the people around you. You’ve got many people who care about you as a human being and who are looking after you and you may not notice it. I know there have been a few times where I’ve been blinded by my own negativity to not see that I have an amazing family of loving parents and relatives and “adoptive” relatives, and a very tight knit group of friends to share my triumph, grief, and love.
This is also the season of New Year’s resolutions, no matter how long or short they are. While the idea is wonderful, it’s keeping it up that’s difficult. Remember that it takes many repetitions to make a resolution a habit, and many more to turn a habit into a lifestyle change. So if you feel like maybe you don’t want to go exercise today or maybe church isn’t on the agenda, remember that if you don’t do it…it might not ever happen. And then you won’t know what benefits you could have reaped. So just do it :p.
Make it count, everyone! Here’s to a bright, happy, and hopefully successful new year.
